Finding A “Hawaiian Polar” Bear?
August 5th, 2008 categories: Rants & Riffs
Hooray for Alaska. Alaska is suing the Department of Interior in an attempt to have it reverse its recent decision to list the polar bear as a threatened species. They are not threatened! The decision was based on a projection that they might become threatened and therefore action should be taken now. The reality of decision like this is not a desire to protect an animal or plant, but it is a back door way for environmentalists to control land. This decision sets the precedent that a bird, mammal or plant need not be threatened in order to burden an area, community or landowner with all of the regulation associated with the Endangered Species Act. It seems one merely needs to find a panel of experts that believes it might become threatened at some point in the next 50 or so years and “Shazam!” the Department of Interior will waive its wand and now the Endangered Species Act applies. Fox News reported the following.
“Alaska objects to the conclusion that polar bears could be endangered within the “foreseeable future,” a timeline the Fish and Wildlife Service put at 45 years, or three generations of polar bears. The state called that number arbitrary.”

So why is a Realtor in Honolulu cheering the State of Alaska? The implications to property rights is huge, I would not be surprised if our fringe environmentalists are on the hunt for a “Hawaiian Polar Bear”. Once they find it, we will next see a petition the Department of Interior and we could be in the same boat. Most people don’t know it, but every bit of regulation adds to the already high cost of housing! Since Honolulu housing is so expensive, I say we need to save the people!

Verrrry interesting information on the endangerment of polar bears. It figures that big oil somehow is in the mix of all of this. It makes me wonder, will the polar bear survive extinction before we can liberate our dependance on oil?
