All is very true, there are also charges for advertising, signs, mailings etc, that come out of your pocket.
Yes, I agree that realtors earn every cent of their commission.
And, in addition to Susie’s comments, most consumers do not realize that unless you are the owner of your own brokerage, the agent will also be paying up to 50% of the total commission on their side of the transaction to the brokerage.
There is also a risk taken on by the realtor that a buyer will not end up buying, for various reasons unrelated to the agent, or that a homeowner will change his or her mind about selling. In these cases, all the time and money spent by the realtor selling a property or driving a buyer around, goes uncompensated. This is all part of the overhead of the realtor that usually goes unrecognized by people who believe that realtors earn too much.
