Manoa Strikes Again!
May 5th, 2010 categories: Neighborhoods, Rants & Riffs
Here is another vintage home that can be found in Manoa. Notice the siding, rockwork, bay window and patio just outside the front door. Looks like someone is going through the process of restoring this grand Honolulu home. Who ever it is, congratulations! Good job.

More Remodeling, Different Reasons
April 30th, 2010 categories: Rants & Riffs
During the last boom in Honolulu real estate we saw an incredible number of remodels happening to homes. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that another boom is happening, however, it may be for different reasons.
“Now, the opposite is happening: Many people who bought during the boom years are accepting the reality that they won’t soon be swapping up for a sybaritic spread. Their mortgages may remain above water, but after years of falling home prices, their equity is so low that the transaction costs of buying a new house would leave little for a down payment.” CLICK HERE TO READ THE ENTIRE WALL STREET JOURNAL ARTICLE
To me, it makes sense to make improvements to your home for your benefit. If you are going to be living there, then you might as well experience the full joy that your home can offer.

750th Blog Post Milestone!
April 21st, 2010 categories: Rants & Riffs
I happened to look at this blog’s statistical report this morning and was surprised to see that, prior to this post, I’ve made 750 separate blog posts. It was hard for me to believe, so I looked deeper and here is what I found.
28,174 people have visited.
55,500 pages have been viewed.
The Internet is an incredible tool and I believe these numbers show strong interest in Honolulu real estate. Hope to get to 1,000 posts this year and I will let you know when the number is reached.

Vintage Manoa Beauty
April 13th, 2010 categories: Neighborhoods, Rants & Riffs
Just when I thought I was finished finding cool vintage homes in Manoa, this past Saturday, I stumbled on this excellent vintage example on a Kuahine Street. Everything about it worked for me and I hope it works for you too.

Evidence That Honolulu’s Economy Is Strong
April 10th, 2010 categories: Rants & Riffs, The Market
In past blogs, I have said that Honolulu’s economy is more diversified and there for less susceptible to strong down turns experienced by the neighbor islands (Maui, Lanai, Molokai and the Big Island). Last week’s Honolulu Advertiser had an article showing that things are better here. This is why the core Honolulu home and condo market has seen less depreciation than market segments in outlying areas.
“State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations data shows O’ahu had a 5.6 percent unemployment rate during the month as 25,100 people went without work.
That was less than any other part of the state, with the next lowest rate on Lāna’i at 7.5 percent. Honolulu’s rate has been lower than the rest of Hawai’i during the ongoing economic downturn.”

Not Knowing What You Don’t Know Can Be Expensive
April 9th, 2010 categories: Rants & Riffs, Video For Buyers, Video For Sellers
In today’s video blog, I discuss how representing yourself in the purchase or sale of a Honolulu home or condo could end up costing you way more than the commission paid to an experienced and professional Realtor.

Another Moiliili Vintage Home
April 5th, 2010 categories: Neighborhoods, Rants & Riffs
This cute home can be found on Coyne Street near Kapiolani Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The porch is outstanding and I love the slight curve at the peak of the roof-line.

10 Ways To Avoid Dooms Day!
April 1st, 2010 categories: Rants & Riffs
I’ve read three of Michael Lewis’s books, Liars Poker, Money Ball and The New New Thing. All three were very good reads. The Wall Street Journal’s on line Market Watch section quotes his latest book “The Big Short” for ten things investors can learn from the last few years of financial mess.
“But for everyone trying to manage their own finances these days, it’s also a gold mine of valuable insights about how the modern economy really functions — and what you need to watch out for.”

Manoa: Home Of the Classics

This vintage Honolulu home was found on a tiny street (almost an alley) just behind Punahou School. Note the arched front door and clap-board siding. Enjoy.
