Shangri La view of Black Point
May 19th, 2008 categories: Views of Honolulu
Here is an unusual view of Black Point. This is taken from the beach in front of the surf spot called “Browns” and it is on the Kahala side of Diamond Head. Look closely and you will see columns of Doris Duke’s estate which now a museum and known as Shangri La. If you like this neighborhood, plan on spending $5,000,000, plus or minus a few million dollars, to get moved in.

Honolulu Cliff Hanger Home
May 15th, 2008 categories: Rants & Riffs, Views of Honolulu
Blogging is great! The more I write, the more I become aware of things that, until now, never really stood out to me. The house in this picture is one that I have walked by many, many times! And then yesterday as I was doing my walk (from the top of Wilhelmina Rise to the bottom and back up to the top again), I looked up and saw this engineering feat. It looks precarious in the picture, but you should see it in person. It doesn’t seem that there is enough structural support for a house hanging this far over the edge. I wonder what it’s like to live in? Here’s to living life on the wild side!

Honolulu’s Paiko Lagoon
May 9th, 2008 categories: Views of Honolulu
I was inspecting a house that fronts on the the mauka side of Kalanianaole Highway and I was able to take this picture of Paiko Lagoon. Paiko is located just beyond Niu Valley and has homes on the ocean and fronting on a lagoon. If you wanted to buy in this Honolulu neighborhood, you could choose from three active listings priced from $1,977,000 to $9,750,000.
Here is a little known fact for fly fishermen, the oceanside of this area offers some of the largest bonefish in the world. One doesn’t get many bites, but a friend of mine has landed fish in the 9 to 12 pound range. Just another great thing about Honolulu.

Hawaii’s Low Unemployment
April 24th, 2008 categories: Rants & Riffs, Views of Honolulu
In March Hawaii’s jobless rate fell to 3.1% from 3.2% in February (see the Star Bulletin article). Further evidence that our economy may be fairing better than many places in the rest of the United States, only four states have an equal or lower unemployment rate (North Dakota, Oklahoma, Wyoming and South Dakota). This may be an explanation for the demand in Honolulu real estate. Lucky we live Hawaii.
